What Commands Should Every Puppy Learn First?

Every puppy training article eventually lists five commands: sit, stay, down, come, and heel. They’re not wrong to include them. But the framing of “what to teach first” usually skips the two things that matter most before any formal cue gets introduced — and without them, the rest of the training is built on shakier ground than it needs to be.

Their Name Comes Before Everything Else

A puppy that reliably looks at you when you say their name has the most fundamental skill in training: attention. Every cue you’ll ever teach depends on the puppy’s ability to orient to you first. “Sit” said to a puppy that’s looking at a bird doesn’t produce a sit. “Sit” said to a puppy that just looked at you has a real chance.

Name conditioning is simple: say the name once, the moment the puppy looks at you (or as they’re looking at you), mark it with a “yes” or a click, and deliver a treat. Repeat. Build the response in low-distraction environments first, then gradually add distraction. Within a week of consistent short sessions, most puppies will snap their head toward you on name recognition alone.

The thing owners rarely anticipate: name poisoning. If the puppy’s name gets used primarily in scolding contexts — “Max! No! Max, stop that! Max!” — the name starts predicting something unpleasant rather than something good. Puppies whose names are used this way begin to ignore or actively avoid responding to it, which owners interpret as stubbornness or selective hearing. Keep the puppy’s name associated with positive attention. When you need to interrupt a behavior, use a neutral sound or a cue like “leave it” rather than the name.

Recall: The Cue That Keeps Them Safe

A reliable recall — coming when called — is the single most safety-critical behavior any dog can have. It’s the behavior that matters at the open gate, at the off-leash park when something goes wrong, at the beach when another dog approaches. According to the AKC, “come” is consistently cited by trainers as the most important cue to establish early, because it becomes significantly harder to build once the dog has established a pattern of ignoring the cue and nothing bad happened.

The mechanics: say “come” once in a happy, inviting voice, move backward (away from the puppy) as they come toward you, and deliver the best reward you have the moment they reach you. High-value treats, enthusiastic praise, play — whatever this specific puppy finds most valuable. The payoff for coming when called should be reliably excellent. A recall trained on mediocre rewards competes poorly with a squirrel, another dog, or anything interesting in the environment.

Never punish a puppy that comes to you, regardless of how long it took or what they were doing before they came. A puppy that got into the trash, took three minutes to respond, and then finally came should be rewarded for coming. Punishing the recall poisons it — the puppy learns that coming to you when called sometimes leads to something bad, which is exactly the calculation you don’t want them making in the moment it matters.

Sit: The Foundation Cue

Sit is usually the first formal cue puppies learn because it’s easy to capture, easy to lure, and immediately useful. A puppy that sits on cue can be asked to sit before meals, before going through doors, before greeting people, before getting the leash on — it becomes a functional politeness behavior that replaces jumping, rushing, and general chaos in common daily situations.

Luring works: hold a treat at the puppy’s nose, slowly move it up and back over the head. As the nose goes up, the hindquarters go down. The moment the rear touches the ground: mark it, treat it. Add the word “sit” once the behavior is happening reliably — not before. Attaching a cue to an inconsistent behavior produces a cue the puppy treats as optional. Wait until the behavior is reliable, then name it.

Leave It: Practical and Potentially Life-Saving

“Leave it” means stop interacting with whatever you’re interacting with and look at me instead. It’s the cue that works at the dropped chocolate bar, the dead bird in the park, the chicken bone on the sidewalk, the electrical cord the puppy is investigating. It’s not on the standard “five commands” list, but experienced owners consistently identify it as one of the most practically useful behaviors they taught early.

Basic training: hold a treat in a closed fist. Let the puppy nose, lick, paw at the hand. The moment they stop and pull back — even briefly — mark and reward with a different treat from the other hand. Repeat until the puppy consistently pulls back when presented with the closed fist. Then add the cue “leave it” before presenting the hand. Build to leaving treats on the floor, then to real-world objects. The cue needs to be proofed across many contexts before it’s reliable enough to count on.

Down and Stay: Useful, But Not Urgent

Down and stay are genuinely useful behaviors — a puppy that can lie down and hold the position gives the owner a reliable way to manage excitement and create calm in almost any situation. They’re also more cognitively demanding for a young puppy than sit and come, and building them well takes more time. Start sit and come and leave it and name recognition first. Add down and stay once the puppy is reliably engaging with training sessions and the earlier skills are solid.

Stay specifically is often taught poorly because owners introduce duration before the puppy understands the concept of maintaining position. The progression matters: first the puppy holds the sit for one second, then two, then five, then ten — with the owner close, building duration before adding distance or distraction. Jumping to “sit-stay” at six feet away on the first day sets the puppy up to break it, which teaches the puppy that stay is optional.

How to Actually Teach Any of These

Sessions between three and five minutes work better than fifteen-minute marathon attempts. A puppy’s attention span is genuinely short, and a session that ends while the puppy is still engaged and successful is more productive than one that continues until the puppy is bored and starting to make errors. End on success, always. Three sessions of five minutes spaced through the day outperforms one session of fifteen minutes in a single block.

Find what the puppy actually values. Some puppies are highly food motivated and will work eagerly for small pieces of kibble. Others need higher-value food — tiny pieces of chicken, cheese, hot dog. Some puppies are more toy and play motivated than food motivated. Using a reward the puppy is genuinely excited about produces faster, more enthusiastic responses than using a reward that’s merely acceptable. The training protocol is the same. The reward makes the difference in the puppy’s level of engagement.

Introduce cues only after the behavior is happening reliably — not before. “Sit” said while luring a puppy that isn’t sitting yet teaches “sit” as the cue for the luring sequence, not for the behavior. Say the word as the behavior is happening or immediately after it completes. Timing is what creates the association.

The sequence that matters most: name recognition, then recall, then sit, then leave it. Everything else follows from those four. A puppy that knows its name, comes when called, sits on cue, and can be redirected from dangerous objects has the skills to be managed safely in almost any situation it’ll encounter in the first year.
