Can Puppies Eat Fish and Is It Safe?

Fish is one of the better protein options available as an occasional treat for puppies — it’s highly digestible, rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support brain development and coat health, and works as a novel protein for puppies that have sensitivities to common proteins like chicken or beef. Three conditions apply: cooked thoroughly, completely deboned, and the right species. All three matter, and one of them — species selection — involves a consideration most owners don’t immediately think about.

Why Species Matters: The Mercury Question

Mercury doesn’t metabolize out of fish tissue — it accumulates over the fish’s lifetime. A small, short-lived fish like a sardine or anchovy hasn’t had much time to accumulate mercury. A large, long-lived predatory fish like a tuna or swordfish has spent years at the top of the food chain consuming smaller fish, each of which contained some mercury, building a significant concentration in its own tissue. The AKC is explicit on this: longer-lived fish species can contain heavy metals including mercury, and the commercially used fish in quality dog food for this reason tends to be shorter-lived species — salmon, herring, whitefish, flounder, walleye, Arctic char.

Dogs are smaller than humans and metabolize substances differently, making them more sensitive to mercury than their owners are. According to board-certified veterinary nutritionist Dr. Laura Gaylord, many pet owners apply similar guidelines to fish consumption for their dogs as they do for themselves — choosing lower-mercury species, limiting higher-mercury ones. The practical version: salmon, sardines, cod, whitefish, herring, and flounder are appropriate regular choices. Tuna, swordfish, king mackerel, and shark are high-mercury species to give only occasionally if at all, not as a regular treat.

Bones Are the Real Danger

The biggest practical risk of feeding fish to dogs is bones. Fish bones are thin, brittle, and numerous — they splinter rather than bend, and a swallowed bone fragment can puncture the esophagus, stomach, or intestine. According to the AKC, fish bones are the primary hazard in fish feeding. Fillets from larger fish need careful manual inspection and removal of any pin bones — feeling along the flesh with fingertips after cooking, when bones have slightly softened and are easier to feel. Small whole fish like sardines have small soft bones; canned sardines are generally fine because the canning process softens bones to the point of safe ingestion.

Skin should also be removed before serving — fatty fish skin, particularly if it was cooked with any oil or seasoning, can trigger digestive upset or pancreatitis in sensitive dogs. Plain cooked skin in small amounts is less of a concern, but removing it is the simpler and safer approach.

Raw Fish: No

Raw fish can harbor parasites and bacteria — Salmonella, Listeria, and for Pacific salmon specifically, the organism that causes salmon poisoning disease (Neorickettsia helminthoeca), a potentially fatal bacterial infection in dogs that doesn’t affect humans. Salmon poisoning is specific to salmon and related fish from the Pacific Northwest and carries a high mortality rate if untreated. Thoroughly cooking fish eliminates these risks. For puppies whose immune systems are still developing, raw fish is particularly inadvisable.

Preparation That Works

Baked, steamed, boiled, or poached — plain, without oil, butter, salt, garlic, onion, or any seasoning. The fish a person would eat with a sauce, in a marinade, fried in oil, or with lemon-butter is not the fish a puppy should eat. The preparation meant for the human at the table is almost never appropriate for the dog. Plain cooked fish, cooled to room temperature, deboned and deskinned, broken into appropriately sized pieces for the puppy’s size — that’s the version that works.

Canned fish is an option when it’s packed in water with no added salt or seasoning. Canned sardines in water are probably the most practical option for most owners — inexpensive, widely available, the canning process softens the small bones, and they’re a low-mercury species. A few sardines broken up over the regular meal a couple of times a week is a clean, convenient approach to adding fish benefits without fish preparation.

What Fish Actually Provides

Omega-3 fatty acids — specifically EPA and DHA — are the primary nutritional argument for fish over other protein sources. DHA specifically is important for brain development and neurological function in growing puppies. EPA supports skin and coat health and has anti-inflammatory properties. Most puppy foods include omega-3s, but fish as an occasional treat supplements those levels in a bioavailable form. High-quality protein with a complete amino acid profile, B vitamins, selenium, and iodine round out the nutritional content.

Fish is also one of the better novel protein options for puppies developing sensitivities to common proteins. A puppy that’s been eating chicken-based food and starts showing signs of food allergy can often tolerate fish as an alternative protein — it’s less commonly used in mainstream puppy foods, which makes it genuinely novel from an immune-response standpoint.

The two most practical choices for most owners: plain cooked salmon (baked or poached, boneless), which has excellent omega-3 content and is widely available, or canned sardines in water, which require no preparation and have the lowest practical barrier to serving. Either one, a couple of times a week in appropriate portions for the puppy’s size, is a good addition to an already balanced diet — not a replacement for it.
